From a lonely Hedgehog to life on the Wild Edges

The story of Ymylon Gwyllt is one of organic and thoughtful growth. For fourteen years, we operated as Draenog Countryside & Wildlife, working as a specialist conservation contractor. While we took great pride in our work in the Welsh countryside and leading educational workshops, we always felt a deeper purpose. Operating for profit often created a tension with our true environmental aims. We intentionally remained small, choosing to preserve our integrity rather than becoming a large corporation where our commitment to the land might be secondary to financial gain. Staying small however did nothing but hinder the companies ability to fulfill large landscape scale contracts.

Founding Ymylon Gwyllt as a social enterprise truly represents a return to our core values. The business structure affords us the opportunity for organic growth in the right direction. Through this purpose-driven path, we can finally create and undertake conservation projects that generate enduring benefits for both the unique habitats, and wonderful people of Wales.

Ymylon Gwyllt translates from Welsh as ‘Wild Edges’. The perfect name for a Community Interest Company dedicated to restoring biodiversity in marginal spaces while uplifting those on the edges of our communities.

Our Logo

If you walk in the Welsh countryside, whether the rugged uplands or the salt battered coastline, you will often spot a Hawthorn tree standing alone in some exposed location. Bent and sculpted by the winds, stunted and small but thriving despite all odds. No rich soil, no perfect conditions. It takes root in the tough edges where other trees struggle to get a footing and grows anyway.

The Hawthorns dense, thorny branches offer safe nesting for birds, its spring blossoms feed pollinators, and its autumn berries sustain wildlife through the harsher months.

Thriving on the edge Like the Hawthorn choosing the least optimal spaces, we focus our conservation efforts on the forgotten margins and rough spaces

Strength in adversity The trees weathered shape is no sign of weakness, but proof of endurance, mirroring the resilience of the people we work alongside - often those facing lifes rougher weather

A living sanctuary The Hawthorn reminds us that when you look for life in the wild edges you find wonderful, strong examples that prove marginal habitat can be a haven for both wild and human life.
